“The New Yoga for People Over 50”, a book
by Susan Francina, relates the differences noted between inactive
elderly people and the seemingly ageless older adults (even the
same age) who practice yoga regularly. The later group of yoga
exercisers showed almost no evidence of common aging ailments
such as arthritis, osteoporosis, heart problems, breathing issues,
incontinence and memory loss.
The ACSM suggest that programs be based on need rather than age,
since physical abilities will differ greatly within the same age
group. How we age has more to with how we think about aging more
than any other factor! Who cares how old we are chronologically?
It is more important that we live each day with a positive attitude,
a high level of enthusiasm, confidence and most importantly contentment!
Yoga has been shown to help alleviate or reduce many health challenges
among the senior population. The less we move the more susceptible
anyone will become to health problems. It can be a cyclical problem.
Move it or lose it!
